Interview with U.D.O.DIRKSCHNEIDER
Ahead of his April 2023 Japan Tour!
Q: Myself and many others are very glad you can get back to Japan. The Game Over tour has been running since last September right across Europe, it must feel good, liberating almost to be doing gigs, your first love again.
UD: Yeah we’re looking forward to coming back to Japan! We’ve been on tour all over Europe and South America and after all this covid stuff, sitting at home for two years and doing nothing, it was really good. I was really surprised that the tour was going so well and now as I said, I’m looking forward to coming to Japan. At the moment though, we are just finishing the new album. Everything is recorded and then we have mixing and mastering and I think it’s coming out in August.

Q: 私や多くの日本人が、あなたが日本に戻れることをとても嬉しく思っています。Game Overツアーは昨年9月からヨーロッパ全域で行われていますが、また真の情熱であるライブをするのは気分がいいのではないでしょうか？
UD: そうだね、日本に戻るのが楽しみだよ。ヨーロッパと南米でツアーを行ってきたんだけど、2年間も家にいて何もしないというコビッドの状態だったからね、本当に良かったよ。ツアーがうまくいっていることに本当に驚いたし、今言ったように、日本に来るのが楽しみだ。今は、ニューアルバムの仕上げをしているところだ。全部録ったので、あとはミキシングとマスタリングで、8月には発売されると思う。
Q: You’ll be doing, two shows, an Accept set and an Udo Dirkschneider set. It’s been almost seven years since you were here last and in that time, you’ve done four albums including the covers album, without giving too much away, what can you tell us about what will be in the sets?
UD: Well the Accept set will be like a jukebox (laughs) with all the classics. We did it a couple of years ago in Europe and it was very successful and people were asking for it and if the people want it, give the people what they want. The second show will be a mix-up. You can’t play everything you know because I have so many albums. There will be some stuff of the last one, Game Over, and some I suppose classic U.D.O. stuff.
Q:今回はアクセプトのセットとウド・ダークシュナイダーのセット、2つのショーを行うことになりました。前回の来日から約7年、その間にカヴァーアルバムを含めて4枚のアルバムを出していますが、あまり多くを語らずに、セットの中身について教えてください。
UD: まあ、アクセプトのセットは、クラシックばかりを集めたジュークボックスのようなものだよ (笑)。 数年前にヨーロッパで実施したところ、大成功した。人々が求めていたのだから、人々が求めるものをやればいいんだ。2回目の公演は、ミックスアップになる。アルバムがたくさんあるので、全部は演奏できないんだ。前作『Game Over』からの曲や、U.D.O.のクラシックな曲もあるだろう。
Q: Your son, Sven has been in the band for a few years, who takes care of who on the road?
UD: Ah! Sometimes he’s taking care of me. (laughs) It’s a lot of fun. Some people do ask me what kind of relationship we have on a tour but it’s fine! He’s doing so much stuff in this band and his band and we get together and sometimes we get together and create melodies, he’s really into everything. He takes of so many things within the band and I really appreciate it. He’s a really good drummer and I’m really proud of him. On the new album, it’s like…wow! He’s been in the band eight years now.
Q: 息子のスヴェンが数年前からバンドに参加していますが、ツアー中は誰が誰の面倒を見るのでしょうか？
UD: ああ！時々、彼が僕の世話をしてくれているんだ（笑）。とても楽しいよ。ツアー中はどんな関係なのか聞かれることもあるんだけど、大丈夫だ! 彼はこのバンドと彼のバンドでいろんなことをやっていて、一緒になってメロディーを作ることもあるし、彼は本当に何にでも夢中なんだ。バンドの中でいろんなことを引き受けてくれていて、本当に感謝している。本当に良いドラマーで、本当に誇りに思っている。新しいアルバムでは、本当に...ワオ！って感じだよ。彼はもう8年もバンドにいるんだよ。
Q: I have a question about your My Way album. What’s the intro at the start of Paint It Black?
UD: You know, this album was because I had nothing to do (laughs). It was just going to be two songs for fun at Stefan Kauffman’s studio and it was great and someone said ‘Can you imagine doing a covers album?. I said I didn’t want to do it but then people said it might be fun and so I said ‘If I do a covers album, it has to be ‘me’ meaning I didn’t want to copy Klaus Meine or Rob Halford or whoever; it had to be my voice on there. We did some different arrangements like Paint It Black and the thing from the producer was that I did have to sing a little bit different but Paint It Black is one of my favourite songs and it came out great! All the songs are from the time when I was young, the songs I would listen to. In the end, I am really happy that I did it and it was successful.
Q：My Wayのアルバムについて質問です。Paint It Blackの冒頭のイントロは何でしょう？
UD: あのね、あのアルバムを作ったのは、何もすることがなかったからなんだよ（笑）。ステファン・カウフマンのスタジオで遊びで2曲作っただけだったんだけど、それがすごく良かったので、誰かが「カバーアルバムを作ることを考えないか」と言われて、「やりたくない」と言ったんだけど、面白くなるかもしれないよと言われたんだ。カバーアルバムをやるなら、クラウス・マイネやロブ・ハルフォードなどのコピーではなく、自分の声でなければいけないと決めたんだ。Paint It Blackのようにアレンジを変えて、プロデューサーの指示で少し違う歌い方をしたんだけど、Paint It Blackは僕の大好きな曲だし、素晴らしい出来になったよ。すべての曲は、僕が若かったころに聴いていた曲だ。結果的に、やってよかった、成功してよかったと心から思っている。
Q: I have to say by the way that Sympathy is my favourite of the John Lawton era Uriah Heep. You do a great version of it.
UD: Thank you. That’s a great song. It was popular here when they did a tour in Europe. I saw them three times with John Lawton and they were great.
Q：ところで、ジョン・ロートン時代のユーライア・ヒープの中で、「シンパシー」が一番好きなのですが、あなたはそれを素晴らしいバージョンで演奏しています。
UD: ありがとう。素晴らしい曲だね。彼らがヨーロッパでツアーをしたとき、ドイツで人気があったんだ。ジョン・ロートンとの共演3回見たけど、最高だった。
Q: I did hear that you recorded I’m Down but you couldn’t get the publisher’s permission.
UD: That was the problem. Yoko Ono said no. (laughs)
Q：「アイム・ダウン」を録音したが、出版社の許可が下りなかったという話は聞いたことがあります。
UD：それが問題だったんだ。オノ・ヨーコがダメだと言ったんだ（笑）。
Q: That doesn’t stop you playing it live though does it?
UD: (laughs) Definitely a possibility! Maybe…
Q：だからといって、ライブで演奏しないわけにはいきませんよね？
UD：（笑）可能性はあるね。もしかしたら...
Q: Most Metal fans would imagine that you eat and breath Metal all day every day, is that the case or do you prefer to listen to a bit of Classical or Jazz or anything else?
UD: Let’s say that when I am at home and I put the radio on I listen to stations here in Germany like Rock Antennae that play Pop, Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal…a really good mix-up. I am also very open minded and sometimes listen to Classical music when I am in the mood. Prince was a big one for me and Tina Turner…so much different stuff I listen to all the time and I think you have to be open minded when listening to and creating music. Of course, I also listen to Deep Purple and Iron Maiden as I’m interested to see what they are doing and that’s a part of it but no, not at home every night. No no no. (laughs)
Q: ほとんどのメタルファンは、あなたが年中無休でヘビーメタルを聴いていると想像していると思いますが、そうなのでしょうか、それともクラシックやジャズなどを少し聴くのが好きなのでしょうか？
UD： 家にいてラジオをつけると、ポップ、ロック、ハードロック、ヘビーメタルがうまくミックスされたロックアンテナのようなドイツの放送局を聴くことが多いね。僕はとてもオープンマインドで、気分次第でクラシックを聴くこともある。プリンスも大好きだったし、ティナ・ターナーも...いろいろなものをいつも聴いている。もちろん、ディープ・パープルやアイアン・メイデンも、彼らが何をしているのか興味があるので聴くし、そういうのもあるけど、いやいや、毎晩家でというわけにはいかない。いやいやいやいや（笑）。
Q: Do you have any hobbies?
UD: Hobbies…good question. In a way I like to chill (laughs) as we are really busy. Already we are touring until next year’s summer so I just try to relax. I read books, biographies and stuff. I’m reading Prince Harry’s at the moment.
Q：趣味はありますか？
UD：趣味...いい質問だね。僕らは本当に忙しいので、ある意味、リラックスするのが好き（笑）。すでに来年の夏までツアーをしているので、とにかくリラックスしようとする。本も伝記とか読む。今はハリー王子のものを読んでいるところだ。
Q: How is it? It’s divided the world with half of the people refusing to read it and half want to read it.
UD: Well I’m only two pages in but it’s already interesting.
Q：どうですか？読むのを拒否する人と読みたい人が半々で世界を二分していますね。
UD：そうだね......まだ2ページしか読んでいないが、すでに面白い。
Q: Do you collect anything?
UD: No. I’m not a collector.
Q:何か集めているものはありますか？
UD：いいえ、コレクターじゃない。
Q: Are you a football fan?
UD: Yeah of course! I’m not a crazy one but I watch what is going on in Germany and England. In Germany I am a fan of Borussia Dortmund and I’m a fan of Liverpool – sorry. (laughs) I’m not obsessive though. If there is a good game going on I’ll have a look.
Q：サッカーファンですか？
UD：もちろん！熱狂的なサッカーファンというわけではないけど、ドイツとイギリスのサッカーリーグは観る。ドイツではボルシア・ドルトムントのファンで、リバプールのファンなんだ。ごめん (笑) でも、こだわりがあるわけではないんだ。いい試合があれば観る。
Q: No need to apologise for that. I’m Leicester born and bred but Liverpool have always been my second team and when you are over here, we shall avoid talking about both our national teams’ failures in Qatar.
UD: (laughs) Ok!
Q: 謝る必要はありません。私はレスターで生まれ育ちましたが、リバプールはずっと私のセカンドチームです。あなたがこちらにくるときは、カタールでの両代表チームの失敗について話すのは避けましょう。
UD：（笑）わかった!
Q: You are a Metal icon. You are up there with Rob Halford and Tony Iommi and others…
UD: Yeah it’s nice to hear and of course makes me proud that I did something in this business but I try to be a normal person, that’s very important for me. On one hand, it’s great to be a Metal icon, a legend, blah blah blah but on the other hand, when I playing with my children, I’m just a normal person. It’s good to have both and be down to earth.
Q:あなたはメタル・アイコンです。ロブ・ハルフォードやトニー・アイオミらと肩を並べる存在ですね...。
UD：そう言ってもらえるとうれしいし、もちろんこの業界で何かできたという自負もあるけど、僕は普通の人間でいるつもりなんだ。それは僕にとってとても大切なことだよ。一方では、メタル界のアイコン、レジェンドになることは素晴らしいことなんだけど、他方では、子供と遊んでいるときは、普通の人だ。両方を兼ね備えていて、地に足がついているのはいいことだと思う。
Q: How about your neighbours? Do they know that you are respected by millions – literally millions – of Heavy Metal fans around the world?
UD: My neighbour fond out a couple of months ago. He had a friend and he asked him how his neighbour was and he replied ‘Oh yeah. His name is Udo Dirkschneider’ and his friend said ‘What? Udo Dirkscneider?’ and he said ‘Yeah why? He’s a nice guy, a normal person, sometimes we talk and have a beer…why?’ and then his friend told him and he went on Google and saw what I did.
Q: ご近所さんはどうですか？彼らは、あなたが世界中の何百万人もの、文字通り何百万人ものヘビーメタルファンから尊敬されていることを知っているのでしょうか？
UD: 僕の隣人は、2ヶ月ほど前にはじめて知った。彼は友人がいて、隣人はどうかと聞かれたら、「ああ、彼の名前はウド・ダーククシュナイダーだ」と答えたら、その友人は「何？ウド・ダークシュナイダーだって？」と聞くと、彼は「ええ、なぜ？普通のいい人で、時々話をしたり、ビールを飲んだりするんだけど......なんでだろう」と言うと、その友達が教えてくれて、彼はGoogleで僕がやったことを見たんだそうだ。
Q: It’s generally accepted that Metal started in Birmingham, England and at the start in Germany there was only Accept and Scorpions. For a while in the eighties it was centred in America with Metallica and Slayer and others and now Germany is undoubtedly the centre of the Metal world and has been for decades. Why is that do you think?
UD: I don’t know. Of course you still have Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Saxon and all those others but there is lacking anything new coming from England. We have so many good new bands in Germany with the older ones, Running Wild and Rage and Gamma Ray and others. Doro is still the Metal Queen in Germany so yes, it’s the centre of Heavy Metal in Europe. Also in the nineties with Nirvana and all the Grunge stuff, Metal was going really down. We were playing to 200 people and I think some bands made a mistake saying that they needed to be more modern and go in a different direction but I always said ‘No. I go my way and here we go!’ Now it’s huge again and it’s coming back up in America. We will see.
Q: メタルはイギリスのバーミンガムで始まり、ドイツでは当初アクセプトとスコーピオンズしかいなかったと一般に言われています。80年代の一時期はメタリカやスレイヤーなどアメリカのメタルが中心でしたが、今ではドイツがメタル界の中心であることは間違いなく、何十年も前からそうでした。それはなぜだと思いますか？
UD: わからない。もちろん、ブラック・サバスやアイアン・メイデン、サクソンなどはまだいるけど、イギリスからは新しいものが出てこないんだ。ドイツには、ランニング・ワイルドやレイジ、ガンマ・レイなどの古いバンドだけでなく、たくさんの良い新しいバンドがいる。ドロは今でもドイツのメタル・クイーンだから、ヨーロッパのヘビーメタルの中心地なんだ。90年代にはニルヴァーナやグランジが登場し、メタルは本当に下火になったんだ。200人の観客を相手に演奏していたのだから、もっとモダンで違う方向に行くべきだと勘違いしたバンドもいたと思うが、僕はいつも「いや、僕は僕の道を行く、さあ行こう！」と言っていた。今はメタルがまた巨大化して、アメリカでも盛り上がってきている。様子を見よう。

UD: Thank you very much and we look forward to it as well after such a long time and you know Peter Baltes is coming as well!
